Welcome to Tri-State Sheltie Rescue

BOARD MEMBERS

Julie Canzoneri - President and Founder

Julie is owned by 6 Shelties and a cat named Polly.
Julie had her first Sheltie, Cindy when she was a child of 10. Though Cindy was probably a mix, she was Sheltie enough to make Julie fall in love with the breed.
Since that time she has owned 7 Shelties of her own, numerous rescues who have spent the final months of their life in her care and has fostered over 30 Shelties herself and aided
in the rescue of many more including 16 Shelties being kept in deplorable conditions by a hoarder
this past December.
In addition Julie has volunteered for two different Sheltie Rescue before founding Tri -State Sheltie
rescue and has a wealth of experience in running a successful rescue and adoption program.
Two of Julie's dogs are Certified Therapy Dogs (TDI) and regularly visit hospitals and the local library where children practice their reading skills by reading to the dogs.
Starting a rescue and helping dogs in need has been a long term goal! Pictured right is me & My First Sheltie, Cindy.

To Be Announced - Vice President

To Be Announced - Secretary & Co-Founder

Theresa Tyers - Treasurer
Theresa has been a full charge bookkeeper for 34 years getting her experience from working for accountants, a retail flower shop and most currently a property management company. She lives on long island with her husband, doug, two sons, Douglas and Vincent, and three dogs, Jake, Snickers and Isabel. She has always had a love for animals, especially dogs, since they have been part of her life since she was very young. She recently became a certified dog groomer after completing a course at BOCES. That's how she adopted her first sheltie, Isabel, who came into the rescue in pretty bad shape. She had a large tumor hanging off her neck, a previously fractured front paw that left her with a limp and maggots. Theresa was asked to shave Isabel so her skin could heal and when she looked into isabel's sad eyes, she knew she had to return the love this sweet senior gives so willingly. Isabel is happy in her new home and doing very well!

Karen Samols - Trustee & FundRaising Coordinator

Karen started her career doing bond market research for Henry Kaufman’s group at Salomon Brothers, Inc. She went on to work at merchant banking firms and is currently at Castle Harlan, Inc. Throughout her career she has had a diverse range of responsibilities from office management, commercial office space build outs to managing stock option plans.

Karen’s love for Shetland Sheepdogs started as a child with her first dog Christy. Ever since that time she fell in love with the breed. Her first rescue was Sammy, a tri-color boy which they rescued 6 ½ years ago. Recently they rescued a sheltie puppy – Daisy.

Karen lives in Englewood, NJ with her husband Scott, son Steven and two shelties Sammy and Daisy.

Mark Rhodes & Michael Decker - Trustee

The first several years of our relationship was spent in pet limbo, debating between ourselves whether to have a cat or a dog. We are not the first couple to suffer this dilemma, however, each having been raised with the opposing pet we were both steadfast in our opinion. Fish won out in the end and ruled our home for many years as the debate continued.
One day, as we left the house for work, we noticed a dog hiding in our front hedges. Terribly frightened and skittish, she ran off when we approached her. When we returned home that evening, she was there again - - still fearful, and ran off again when approached.  We put out food and water, and after a period of time she returned and enjoyed the meal. This routine went on for nearly a week, each day we would up the ante putting out a box for her to sleep in and then a blanket in the box and so on and so on. Each day she would still run away, but decreasing in distance as her dowry built.  To make a long story short, this emaciated, bug and parasite ridden waif soon became our first dog, and she was a sheltie.
We named her Sophie and took her everywhere with us. She went to work with us every day and on every vacation we ever took.  She was our best friend and our consoling confidant. She was the best dog I ever knew, and we spoiled her rotten for it. Sadly, after 12 years, Sophie passed away leaving a void in our lives that will never be filled.
It was at that time that we came to know of the Shetland Sheepdog Rescue Society.  We soon came to meet and fall in love with a sweet little male sheltie named Max, who was in need of a loving home.  Max brought such joy back into our sorrow filled home, even though he was not Sophie, and would never fill her place in our hearts. It was with great thankfulness for having Max in our lives, that we started volunteering for the rescue society - - A wonderful group of people, each doing their part to bring together loving homes for shelties in need. We eventually took in a foster dog named Luke, who was exactly what Max needed in his life, and in short order we adopted Luke as well. The two of them love each other and are constant companions.
As fate would have it, a small kitten has also wandered into our lives. Her name is Suzu. The dogs love her, and the three of them play together beautifully. Life has a funny way of finding its own equilibrium - - Cat people come to love dogs, dog people come to love cats and a family is made whole by the love that binds us all together.
Amy Cook - Trustee
Amy was about 2 years old when she was first introduced to Shelties and her family adopted a handsome sable boy named Happy. She had no idea that her life had changed at that moment…Amy came to love the breed so much that when she and husband Bob were traveling with the military, and ready to adopt their first dog, it simply had to be a Sheltie. And a very special little sable Sheltie boy named Copper found them from a farm in Kansas. Copper spent the next 13+ years bringing happiness and laughter to them every day. During those years, the family grew, as bi-black Sheltie Timmy arrived, son Aidan, and then their first rescue dog, a blue-merle boy named Dash. After Dash learned to love life again, it became clear that fostering and helping rescues was a natural choice for the family. Since then, a sweet rescue Sheltie named Bandit, another little bi-black boy, joined the pack. There’s no way this busy household can be without Shelties -- as family members and fosters. Amy began her career as a Special Education teacher, and now works part-time in a local school; she is a Mom, hobby artist, enjoys local wines, and the outdoors. She currently lives in upstate NY and looks forward to adding more Shelties to the family and helping animals in need.
